How to “Close” Your Home Before Vacation

How to “Close” Your Home Before Vacation

Leaving for vacation should feel relaxing, not stressful. Taking a few extra steps before you leave can help protect your home from break-ins, leaks, power issues, and unexpected problems while you’re away.

Here’s a simple checklist to help properly “close” your home before vacation:

Lock all doors, windows, sliding doors, and garage access points
• Arm security systems, cameras, and motion-sensor lights
• Stop mail and newspaper deliveries so the home doesn’t look vacant
• Use timers or smart lights to make the home appear occupied
• Remove spare keys from outside hiding spots

Inside the home, focus on preventing damage and odors:

Turn off the main water valve to help avoid leaks or flooding
• Unplug small appliances and electronics to reduce fire risks and save energy
• Adjust the thermostat to a vacation-friendly setting
• Empty trash bins and remove perishable food from the fridge
• Run the dishwasher and laundry before leaving, then leave doors slightly cracked to help prevent mold

Don’t forget the exterior of the home as well:

Secure patio furniture, grills, and outdoor tools
• Mow the lawn before leaving
• If possible, leave a car parked in the driveway

Before you walk out the door, do one final check to confirm the garage is closed, windows are locked, and all smart home systems are working properly. A little preparation can go a long way in giving you peace of mind while you’re away.
